The BEST and WORST Times to Connect with Your Teen 👇

WORST…
🚫Right after school in the car:
Teens are often drained right after school and need some space to unwind on the way home. Even well-meaning questions can backfire, especially when they bring school back to mind at a moment when teens are simply craving time alone.
🚫When they have headphones/earphones on in their room:
After a long day at school, teens often retreat to their room and listen to music through headphones. This can be a healthy way to create a safe, personal space where they can process and sit with the emotions they’ve carried throughout the day.
🚫At the dinner table:
Even though many parents see dinner at the table as an ideal time to connect, teens often resist it because it can feel like just another obligation they have to get through. Instead of viewing it as a chance to talk, they may see it as something to finish so they can return to their own personal time.

BEST…
✅During a family outing activity outside of the home such as going to a restaurant to eat:
When teens (and adults) participate in activities outside the home, it naturally supports emotional regulation– through movement, background sounds, and engaging tasks. These built-in cues offer simple, effective ways to cope with negative feelings.
✅When engaging in a fun activity with them such as playing a card game, shooting hoops, taking a walk, or watching a TV show:
Teens often have less of a guard up when they are engaging in a “side-by-side” mutually fun activity. This way, conversations can happen more organically and more on their agenda rather than on their parents’.
✅During a once per quarter activity with just parent and him:
Intentional, quality time can have a powerful impact on any teen or child. Choosing an activity together every few months sends a clear message that your relationship isn’t just about control—it’s about connection and shared experience.

Sitting and talking about feelings for a full 50-minute therapy session can be challenging for adolescent and teenage boys. In my sessions, I often incorporate a share activity—like @uno or other card games—alongside conversation, which can be highly effective and beneficial for many reasons:

1. It takes away the pressure of maintaining eye contact all the time and having the attention solely focused on them
2. It creates a shared, side-by-side activity—one of the many ways boys and men naturally connect and bond
3. It lessens the intensity of feelings that may come up when talking about topics that may be developmentally challenging to talk about
4. It creates an environment that allows them to decompress after a long day at school
